National
Accreditation
In order to referee
Rugby League, officials must first be accredited.
The National Referees'
Accreditation Scheme (NRAS) has been implemented to ensure that
Rugby League Referees, throughout the country have consistent
and thorough training as they progress through their careers.
The process of accreditation
is a graduated learning experience that provides referees with
theory and practical skills required to officiate in matches.
Preliminary Accreditation
is the first step towards becoming a Rugby League Referee
Similar to your driving
"Learners Permit", you will be educated in the Laws
of the Game, practical refereeing & other important aspects
of refereeing.
You will also be
supervised while officiating in matches & coached to becoming
a better referee.
Within a year of
gaining your Preliminary Accreditation, you will undertake certain
tasks to qualify you with a Level 1 Accreditation.
During your time
as a Preliminary Referee, you will have had several on-field assessments
in addition to off-field training, rules revision & other
coaching
Once you attain an
appropriate level, and within 12 months of acquiring your Preliminary
Accrediatation, you may qualify to become accredited as a Level
1 Referee.
Level 1 Referees
are only qualified to referee matches up to Under 19's although
age restrictions apply for Referees under the age of 18.
Level
2
Level 2 Accreditation
is available to Referees, 18 years of age or over, who have completed
the prerequisites during their Level 1 time and wish to officiate
at higher levels.
As well as having
satisfactory on-field assessments, you will undertake further
rules revisions, complete workbooks and learn more about practical
refereeing, match preparation & other important subjects.
Once acredited as
a Level 2 Referee, you may officiate in Senior football (e.g.
District A Grade) and representative fixtures (e.g. NSWRL Harold
Matthews, Jersey Flegg & S.G.Ball)
Accreditation levels
above Level 2 are required to officiate in matches outside of
the Junior League Districts.
For example, NSW
Rugby League Graded Competitions (Jim Beam Cup & Premier League)
and the NRL Competition require at least a Level 3 Qualification.
Making
it to the top
All referees start
learning their trade in the under 6's ,7's & 8's - Mini Footy.
Once your coaches feel
that you are ready you will begin your climb though the grades
of Junior and District Football.
Each District is entitled
to nominate talented referees to join the Junior Representative
Squad which officiates in the Harold Matthews and SG Ball competitions
of the NSW Rugby League.
From there, referees
who show they have the right stuff may be graded for First Division
or NRL duty.
With experience, a
good attitude and good coaching, any referee can make it to the
top!
