Jack Argent "Patrons" Trophy

History
In 1982, the Jack Argent Trophy was established. It would be later known as the Patron’s Trophy. Jack Argent was a Parramatta Club stalwart and Honorary Member for Life of the Parramatta Referees’ Association. He served as Patron of the Association from 1986 up until his passing in 2004. In 1989, the Association honoured Jack with the aforementioned award of Honorary Life Membership. The Patron’s Trophy has historically been presented to the Referee who officiates the A Grade 1st Division Grand Final, the match considered to be the District’s highest appointment.

2017 Recipient
The recipient of the 2017 Patron’s Trophy is Chris Chalkley. This is the third time that Chris has received the award in his ten years as a referee. Chris was appointed to the 2017 A Grade 1st Division Grand Final along with Touch Judges Jake Peters-McDonald and Todd Ripps. The match was played between Wentworthville and Merrylands at New Era Stadium.

The appointment to his second A Grade 1st Division Grand Final was a significant one for Chris because he joins a small group of referees that have refereed multiple A Grade 1st Division Grand Finals. Stephen Ellison has been the Association’s most successful A Grade Grand Final Referee, controlling four straight Grand Finals. Brad Levy, Ernie Bull, Leon Edney and Dave O’Keefe have refereed three each. Chris joins Patrick Mackey, Philip Sung, Paul Hope, Les Henson and Robert McIntosh who have each refereed two matches.

This year, Co-Patron Max Dunn, who was representing Ian McCall in their shared role presented Chris with his on-field game day jersey. As has become tradition, the jerseys of the A Grade Grand Final Officials were embroidered to mark the occasion. Jake Peters-McDonald who was touch judging his fourth A Grade 1st Division Grand Final was presented his jersey by Life Member Ian Parnaby whilst Todd Ripps, who was touch judging his second A Grade 1st Division Grand Final was presented his jersey by Life Member Ken McNaught. In a willing encounter played between the two teams, Chris and his team performed strongly, doing the Association proud. The trio had run together countless times throughout the last few seasons and therefore had plenty of experience working with each other.

Congratulations Chris on a fantastic achievement in your refereeing career. It is a privilege and an honour to referee one A Grade 1st Division Grand Final but to say that you have achieved this feat on multiple occasions is a truly great honour and one that is well deserved after your years of ongoing service to the Association both on the field and off it. The Association looks forward to your continued success in the years to come.
